What is a dark web scan?
A dark web scan checks whether your company's data has surfaced on the dark web, in underground forums, on paste sites or in known leak collections. The search is usually based on your domain: for example, employee email addresses and credentials, mentions of your company in attacker forums, or records from past data leaks. The result shows whether and where evidence was found, so you can lock down affected accounts in time.
What a dark web scan finds
Typical findings include leaked credentials (email address with password or hash), credentials from infostealer logs, corporate email addresses in known data leaks, and mentions of your domain in relevant forums. Every finding is a signal, not proof of a successful attack — it shows where you should look and act.
How the scan works at Darkscope
You enter your domain in the free domain check, no account required. Darkscope matches it against its own database and shows you the result. If you want more than a one-off check and prefer ongoing visibility, Darkscope continuously monitors your domain and reports new findings as prioritized alerts with recommended actions.
Our own crawler network, our own database
Darkscope uses its own crawler network for the dark web scan. The data doesn't come from purchased third-party lists — it's gathered independently and held in our own dark web database. Processing happens exclusively on servers in Germany, GDPR-compliant and without US sub-processors; a data processing agreement (DPA) is provided as standard. That gives you clarity on where a finding comes from and where your own data stays.
What a dark web scan doesn't do
A scan is a snapshot based on the sources covered. No findings doesn't mean nothing was ever stolen: not every data leak becomes public, and not every closed source is reachable. The scan also doesn't replace a penetration test and doesn't test any of your systems. For real assurance, combine it with multi-factor authentication and continuous monitoring.
One-off scan or continuous monitoring?
New data surfaces every day. A one-off scan shows what's known up to today. Continuous dark web monitoring reports new findings as soon as they appear, shortening the time between a leak and your response. The free domain check is a good starting point; for ongoing coverage, see the pricing page for details.
Frequently asked questions about the dark web scan
What does a dark web scan cost at Darkscope?
The domain check is free and requires no account. Continuous monitoring is a paid service; see the pricing page for details.
What should I do if credentials were found?
Change the affected passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, end existing sessions and check the accounts for suspicious activity. If personal data is affected, also check whether a notification obligation under Art. 33 GDPR applies (typically within 72 hours of becoming aware).
Does the dark web scan replace dark web monitoring?
No. The scan is a snapshot, monitoring is ongoing observation. They complement each other: the scan to get started, monitoring for continuous operation.
